Alan’s Rule #1: Wine is Meant to be Drunk, not Collected.

June 28th, 2008 · No Comments

There is a small class of wine lovers out there who collect wines, usually rare and high-end. Unfortunately, these people seem to have a huge influence on the rest of the wine lovers of the world. They perpetuate the idea that wines always get better with age, and that wines are unfit to drink when young. Also, that the "great" wines of the world should not be drunk at all, but held as trophies.

Don't like this idea. Wine is meant to be drunk, not collected. What the hell is the point of a winemaker going through all of the effort to make a wine, only to have the wine sit indefinitely in its bottle?

99% of wine is released ready to drink. It does not get much better than it does on its release day. In addition, most wine will be past its peak within just a few years after release. Repeat after me: Most wine does not get better with age, and most wine is at its best upon release.

Now, I know how rare a bottle of Petrus or Domaine de la Romanee Conti or Screaming Eagle is. These wineries have earned their reputations for producing excellent wines. I know how cool it is to see one of these bottles in someone's cellar, but if you're one of the fortunate few to own a bottle from one of these producers, it's a complete insult to the wineries and the rest of the wine lovers of the world to let the bottle sit unenjoyed.

Besides, what is a cooler story to tell: "Did I ever tell you about the time when I bought that DRC", or "Did I ever tell you about that bottle of DRC that I drank?"
